A few ideas for Madison area from our many visits there -

Capitol Square/State Street: Capitol Building (dome is largest granite dome in the world and is taller than the Natl Capitol), bldg includes 43 kinds of stone, some with fossils (look for the starfish on the stairs!); Saturday Farmer's Market; roam the 1 mile down State Street (pedestrians only) to the (other!) UW campus. On the way, go into the new Overture Center, a beautiful performance center with modern art museum also. This building was a private donation from a single individual(about $200 million to build, I believe) and is worth seeing as it is dramatic and that's an unusual gift for a city to receive. From there, you continue to amble down State Street toward the UW Campus at the far end. There's an eclectic mix of things from typical student/hippie stuff to Land's End Outlet, to galleries, restaurants, etc., complete with street musicians and panhandlers.

UW Campus: Memorial Union and Union Terrace are a must - try to go on a sunny afternoon - get a double scoop of ice cream from the UW Dairy store in the entry (it's the BEST) and head down to the Terrace. Sit outside and drink in the atmosphere - quite the student union setting! You can rent boats to take out on Lake Mendota if it's a nice day. (Maybe the sailboat that's painted with black blotches to look like a cow will be anchored in front of you - it often is there.) You can also stroll down the lake to the left from there for a ways (a walk John made daily when his dorm was down at Trigg sophomore year). I think there is probably free music in the evenings somewhere there too. A guided walking tour of the UW Campus takes off from the Red Gym (near the Union) at 3:00 weekdays and Noon on weekends. The university and its campus are worth learning about if you have the time - lots of history/fame from UW-Madison. A few interesting things on campus are Bascom Hall (UW signature bldg) Observatory Hill & Carillon, Babcock Hall Dairy Store and tour, UW Medical complex area, Picnic Point, Humanities Bldg (where John spent many hours...weird building!), Picnic Point, old dorm buildings down on the lakeshore (Trigg, etc.) etc., etc.

Monona Terrace: This convention center built on the "other" lake, Lake Monona, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who lived much of his life in Wisconsin. Worth seeing.

Kohl Center: This large civic center/sports venue is worth at least walking up to to see the Chihuly sculptures hanging in the entry - Yes, Chihuly studied at the UW-Madison, so they claim him too!

Camp Randall: The UW Football stadium is built on the site of a Civil War army base - Camp Randall. You can tell from its size (holds 80,000+) that football is BIG here.

Miscellaneous: Drive through the city to see the older neighborhoods with lovely stone homes (several east of campus just off Gorham to Lake Mendota (where my favority little stone church is!), or going southwest along Monroe and Nakoma, and Eagle Heights area is nice also), the many golf courses, etc. There are lots of good restaurants, which John can recommend too. We have especially enjoyed Bluephies (sp?) and Quivey's Grove.

Outside of Madison there are several things we have enjoyed, and some which we haven't had a chance to do yet: Driving west, there's nice loop of things including Verona (chocolate shop!), Mount Horeb (mustard museum), Blue Mounds (caves very cool, figuratively and literally!), Little Norway (a fun, low-key Norwegian "museum" that's an old homestead/farm with several buildings nicely restored in about a couple acres of land). Taliesin (Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio) is in Spring Green (a bit north and west of Madison?) has several buildings, I believe, and we have not yet done it. There are also many Indian mounds (some thousands of years old) in Wisconsin, and in Madison area, which we have never focussed on or visited, but they sound interesting too, and many are right in the area, I believe.
